The stage is the platform on which microscope slides and specimens are attached for observation. Stages are typically equipped with a slide holder and graduated markings for reference. There is an opening on the stage for incident light transmission, as well as lock controls and translational control knobs for moving slides during observation.
Slides are classified according to design and intended use. A plain slide is rectangular and has clips for holding the specimen slide. Circular stages rotate 360° and permit complete rotation and fine tuning of slide position. Inverted microscope stages, in which objectives are mounted and view specimens from the bottom, typically possess a condenser and other modifications.
The quality and durability of construction, the accuracy of graduations, as well as exchangeability are important considerations for the intended needs.
